'La Petite Chambre' makes the Archiflick shortlist!
We have been rather quiet, but we have been busy...making a short film! And now that it's been made public, we're allowed to tell you about it!
Our film has been shortlisted for Archiflick - the 2012 National Architecture Awards short film competition - hurray!
The brief was to make a 30-60 second film that focused on or further explored any aspect of a project shortlisted for the 2012 National Architecture Awards. One of the provocations was to showcase a project in a way it hasn't been seen before.
Out of the four WA projects shortlisted for the National Architecture Awards, we decided to do a film on the Cultural Centre Amenities by Coniglio Ainsworth Architects. The other WA shortlisted projects were VENN by Matthews Architecture, 58 Stevens St by Officer Woods, and Hilton Community Centre by Bernard Seeber. The Cultural Centre Amenities seemed the most publicly accessible project and stimulated the most ideas amongst the group (including some spontaneous script-writing by BM), so life got set aside and we went off to do some filming in a public toilet...!

Manjimup SHS Science Laboratories - JCY
On
the edge of Manjimup, a large inland town in WA’s South-West, is a
multi-purpose educational campus which has expanded since 1999 from a
Senior High School to include a TAFE, a primary school, and an Edith
Cowan University facility.
Three science laboratories and an accompanying staff office have been constructed in the northern part of the campus, replacing transportable buildings that used to house the senior high school’s physics and chemistry labs.

Crown Hall
Today Google is celebrating Mies van der Rohe's would-be-126th birthday. I thought I would celebrate it by posting some photos from my recent visit to Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology, also pictured in Google's doodle above. It was great to see this building bustling with activity, although I also wondered if these were all architecture students staying back late for a crit, or to work in studio on their models and drawings. Then again, who wouldn't want to hang out after hours in a Mies building... It was all very strangely familiar and yet I couldn't bring myself to step inside

The Queen in Australia

There is a program on ABC iview at the moment called 'The Queen in Australia' that records the first royal tour of Australia, produced and directed by Stanley Hawes. It was the first colour, feature-length documentary to be made in Australia.
There is a rather romantic passage about Australia near the beginning (starts at about 04:10) where the voice on the wireless reads, to the accompaniment of equally romantic images, what could almost be a poem.
'They speak for nine million people spread across six states.
They speak for giant Queensland, beneath its Capricorn horizons, carpeted with sugar cane.
For Victoria, where channel and dam and sluice have wrested increase from the tawny soil.
For boundless Western Australia, where the axes sound to the towering Karri forest.
They speak for New South Wales, with its Blue Mountain ramparts, with its broad-breasted rivers rolling down to the Pacific.
For South Australia, for the vineyards of its wine country, loaded with their smoke-blue grapes.
For its clanging ship yards, risen from a bed of iron ore on the arid coastal flats.
For lake lovely Tasmania, encircled by the southern seas.
They speak for a land of shy and gentle creatures.

situate (under construction)
The Vision
'situate was an international sculpture competition for Perth, Western Australia.
$1 million was offered for an artwork to transform the city landscape, with Forrest Place - the location of a proposed major upgrade - announced as the site.
The competition provided a model of cooperation between State and Local Governments to deliver major commissioned artworks within the city CBD. It was an invitation to think creatively about what we want from our capital city.
This competition has provided tangible illustrations of what can be achieved when committed to the belief that our sense of place and regional identity can be reflected in our built environment.
The winner of the competition - James Angus and his team - was announced on Friday September 11, 2009.
James Angus' artwork will be the single largest art commission undertaken in Western Australia.'

Sir John Soane's House Museum
John Soane had an amazing personal collection of antiquities, books and drawings, and intended to 'allow free access for students and the public to "consult, inspect and benefit" from the collections', so much so that he negotiated an Act of Parliament so that upon his death, the house and its collection would be preserved and still accessible to the public. The museum also includes his own various sketchbooks, drawings and models (including experiments in his own ceilings). The result is a fascinating look into this man's mind - I came away with a sense of awe and fear, that he must have either been a genius or a madman, or both.
Seeing as I keep going on about this house museum to various people, but don't have any images of the interior/wasn't allowed to take any, I have been doing some internet scouring in attempt to find something to show!
